Age of Reason: The Scientific Revolution, Enlightened Thought and its Impact
-Renaissance: humanity more the center of thinking
-Scientific Revolution: challenged long standing beliefs, created modern evidence based science
-importance of human progress, individual liberty, religious tolerance valued
-printed word significant ie encyclopedie which talked about power to the people, inalienable rights
-challenged all absolutes, monarchs threatened in a way, so some promised enlightened reforms
-after devastation from violence and 30 yr war from protestant reformation, religious enlightenment ideas came about
-thinkers declared simple truths of jesus and being children of god, separation of church and state in order to stop religious fighting happening
-enlightenment ideas influenced american and french revolutions
SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION
-humans have long been capable of scientific development (Greek contributions to physics and astronomy, Roman engineering, and Chinese developments in printing, shipbuilding and navigation)
-so, early modern european philosophers and scientists:The rediscovery of classical Greek and Roman knowledge and the importation of Arabic science during the Renaissance made scientific inquiry famous throughout European culture.
-black death, losing people also led to people now feeling the need for and contributed to science and technology
-many people built on the other’s discoveries
-understanding the human body more now
-understanding natural world -> apply principles to improve human condition
SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT AND SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION
-before, people were told to not change any social order since it was preordained by God and other church ruling life things
-changed up with different enlightenment thinkers arguments about society
-these ideas led to many revolutions in other countries
-deits: still believed in God created and governs universe, also believed that humans could use their own reason to promote good in the world
-all led to more buildings such as schools, hospitals
