Who was Gaudi?
Art Nouveau architect
his architecture is Gothic in structural principle and meditteranian, not to say Islamic.
Famous for buildings such as the casa Mila, Sagrada Famila etc.
Who was Viollet-le-Duc
Architect and theorist
He wrote “Discourses on Architecture” (1877)
He argues for a totally new way of doing things
He is gothic (but not in style)
Material expression - materials should generate form
Logic of struture should be exposed
Who was Horta?
Art Nouveau architect
One of the first architects to make extensive use of iron in domestic architecture
He treated iron as thought it were an organic filament insinuated in the fabric to subject the inertia of stone.
Famous buildings: Hotel Tassels and Maison des Peuple.
Who was Guimard?
Creator of “Style Metro”
Highly influenced by Horta.
Masterpiece: Humber de Romans Concert Hall (1901) - it was later demolished in 1907.
