Bauhaus and Gropius Flashcards
Who was Walter Gropius?
He advocated a workshop based design education for both desigers and craftsmen.
In April 1919 he was appointed director of the Bauhaus.
The aim was no longer to demonstrate a feeling for contrasting materials and forms, but rather to reveal the aesthetical properties of free standing asymmetrical structures.
In the last 2 years of Gropius’ post -
bauhaus moved from Weimar to Dessau
What was the Bauhaus Proclamation (1919)
There is no essential difference between the artist and the craftsman. The artist is an exalted craftsman.
New cultural unity could be attained only through a new art of building, where each separate discipline would contribute to the final form:
“There will be no boundaries between the craft, sculpture and painting; all will be one: architecture”
The Bauhaus was the outcome of a continuous effort to reform applied art education in Germany around the turn of the century.
