What does saliva breakdown in the mouth?
Begins to breakdown carbohydrase and lipids
How does the bolus pass through the oesophagus?
Peristalsis and gravity
What are the two ways, the stomach breaks down food?
Chemical via the bile and mechanical via contractions to churn the food
What is a bolus called after it has reached the stomach?
Chyme
How is the chyme, alkalised after the stomach?
In the duodenum, alkali fluids from the liver bile and pancreas mix with the chyme
What does the liver bile do?
Digest fats
Where does most chemical breakdown of food occur?
Small intestine
Where does food enter after the small intestine?
Large intestine
What does the large intestine do?
mechanical movement of the bolus, and absorption of the water
What is the order of parts of the large intestine?
Cecum, ascending colon, transverse and descending colon, sigmoid and rectum
