Autonomic nervous system Flashcards
What is the autonomic nervous system?
A functional division of the nervous system
What cells do the efferent neurons of the autonomic nervous system control?
Smooth muscle cells
cardiac muscle
gland cells
What are the two subsystems of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic nervous and parasympathetic nervous system
How does the sympathetic nervous system reach a target cell?
Begins in the middle section of the spinal cord, through a short axon to a ganglia next to the spinal cord before a longer axon to the target cell
How does the parasympathetic nervous system reach a target cell?
Begins in the upper or lower part of the spinal cord, through a long axon to ganglia then a shorter axon to the target cell
What is a major change the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for?
Fight or flight
What is a major change the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for?
Rest and digest
