Interstitial cells of CAJAL
Where is it found?
GI tract - esophagus to rectume
most common in stomach (60%)
small bowel (30%)
What are the symptoms?
GI bleed, occult GI bleed, abdominal pain
Abdominal mass, nausea, distention
How is it diagnosed?
CTscan, EGD, colonoscopy
How are distant metastasis diagnosed?
PET
What is the tumor marker?
C-KIT (CD 117 Ag)
What is the prognosis
Local spread, distal metastasis
Poor long term prognosis: >5cm, mitotic rate >5per 50 HPF
What is the treatment?
Resect with negative margins with chemotherapy
Is LN dissection needed?
NO
Chemotherapy for metastatic or advanced disease?
Imatinib
What is Maltoma?
Mucosal-associated-lymphoproliferative Tussue
What is the most common site of MALTOMA?
Stomach
What is the causative agent?
H. Pylori
What is the medical treatment?
Non surgical: triple therapy and chemotherapy/XRT in refractory cases
