Describe the key features of Crohn’s disease (endoscopic appearance, distribution, histology)

A

Endoscopic appearance:
- Skip lesions/cobblestone appearance

Distribution
- Can affect any part of GI tract from mouth to anus, most commonly affects terminal ileum

Histology:

  • Transmural inflammation
  • Goblet cells increased
  • Granulomas

Describe the key features of Ulcerative Colitis (endoscopic appearance, distribution, histology)

A

Endoscopic appearance:
- Continuous/uniform inflammation with thin walls and loss of vascular pattern

Distribution:

  • Rectum always affected
  • Only affects large bowel

Histology:

  • Submucosal inflammation only
  • Depletion of goblet cells
  • Crypt abscesses
