What is gastritis?
Inflammation of the gastric mucosa
What are the causes of gastritis/duodenitis?
H.pylori infection
NSAIDs
Alcohol
Stress
Autoimmune gastritis
What are the symptoms of gastritis/duodenitis?
Dyspepsia or epigastric discomfort,
Nausea and vomiting,
Loss of appetite
What are the investigations for gastritis/duodenitis?
1st line: H.pylori urea breath test and faecal antigen test (PPIs held for 14 days) and FBC
Others: Endoscopy
What is the treatment of H.pylori infection?
14 days of a PPI and two antibiotics (clarithromycin and amoxicillin or metronidazole)
What are the main risk factors for stress induced GI bleeding?
Mechanical ventilation or coagulopathy
What are the complications of gastritis?
- Gastric carcinoma/carcinoid/lymphoma,
- Achlorhydria
- Peptic ulcer disease
