Gastritis Flashcards
Gastropathy
injury to the gastric mucosa associated with epithelial cell damage + regeneration
little or no accompanying inflammation
Gastritis
inflammation of the gastric mucosa
How does use of aspirin or NSAIDs –> mucosal damage
they deplete mucosal prostaglandins by inhibiting the cyclo-oxygenase pathway
Treatment for gastropathy
PPI with removal of the offending cause if possible
Most common cause of gastritis?
H. pylori infection
others: AI gastritis, viruses + duodenogastric reflux
Diagnosis of gastritis?
histologically, incidental finding from endoscopy biopsy
Acute inflammation (in gastritis)
associated with neutrophilic infiltration
Chronic inflammation (in gastritis)
characterised by mononuclear cells
mainly lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages
Tx gastritis
no specific treatment, although eradication treatment for H. pylori is given
