Gastric Ulceration - proton pump inhibitors Flashcards
1
Q
Name 3 Proton pump inhibitors
A
1) Omeprazole
2) Esomeprazole
3) Lansoprazole
2
Q
describe how they inhibit the proton pump
A
They react with the cysteine group on the proton pump thus inhibiting it, its actions are irreversible. If you want to overcome it, cells need to make more proton pumps.
3
Q
When are they given and how are they innactivated in the stomach
A
They are given orally once daily in cases not responding to H2 antagonist treatment. It becomes inactive at a neutral pH and has a short plasma life. However it accumulates in areas of low pH, so can still be effective for 2-3 days.
4
Q
side effects of proton pump inhibitors
A
diarrhoea (however not common)
