Gastric Ulceration - control of acid secretion Flashcards
Give two examples of H2 receptor antagonists used in the control of acid secretion
Cimetidine
Ranitidine
What are the mechanisms of action of Cimetidine and Ranitidine?
Block cAMP so reduce basal and food stimulated acid secretion.
They reduce both the volume of gastric juice secreted and its hydrogen ion concentration
How are Cimetidine and Ranitidine administered?
orally
What are the side effects of Cimetidine and Ranitidine?
Cytochrome p450 inhibition
Decreased sexual male function because it has some effect on androgen receptors so can reduce sperm count
Give an example of an M1 receptor antagonist used in the control of acid secretion
Pirenzipine
What is the mechanism of action of Pirenzipine?
It reduces basal and food stimulated acid secretion.
As efective as cimetidine in healing duodenal and gastric ulcers
How is Pirenzipine administrated?
given orally
What are the side effects of Pirenzipine
dry mouth
