Drugs and motility in the GI tract - Diarrhoa Flashcards
symptomatic treatment of diarrhoea
correct fluid and electrolyte loss
food withdrawal
Other treatment of diarrhoea
antibiotics
absorbants
name the 4 Absorbants
Charcoal
Kaolin
Pectin
Bismuth Salts
What are the two types of motility-modifying drugs used in treating diarrhea?
Antimuscarinics
Opiods
What is the mechanism of action of Antimuscarinics?
Reduce peristalsis and segmental contractions
When are Antimuscarinics used?
Might be used in short term for relief of pain
What receptors do the opiods act on?
mu opiod receptor
What is the mechanism of action of the opiods in treating diorrhoea?
Reduce peristalsis but increase segmental contractions by direct effect on mu opiod receptors.
Some opiods also increase fluid and water absorption
What are the side effects of opiods?
nausea
vomiting
constipation
Give an example of an anti-inflammatory agent used in the treatment of diorrhoea?
Sulpasalazine
When is Sulpasalazine used?
Used in treatment for inflammatory bowel syndrome and severe ulcerative colitis
name two coticosteroids used to treat diarrhoea
Prednisolone
Dexamethazone
What is the effect of Prednisolone
Dexamethazone?
they have antinflammatory effects
