Gas Laws. Flashcards
Describe the behavior of non-ideal gases.
Van der Waal
Gas pressure is inversely proportional to gas volume at constant temperature.
Boyle
The total pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures.
Dalton
6.02 x 10^23
Avogadro
Gas pressure increases if temperature increases and volume does not change.
Gay-Lussac
One mole of ideal gas occupies 22.4 Liters at 0 C and 1 atm.
Avogadro
Volume increases when temperature increases, if pressure is constant.
Charles
Twice as much o2 will dissolve in arterial blood if the alveolar partial pressure of o2 is doubled.
Graham
What are the applications of Henry’s Law?
- Permits calculation of the amount of o2 dissolved in blood.
- Permits calculation of the amount of CO2 dissolved in blood.
What are the application of Boyle’s Law?
- Explains the release into the atmosphere of a large amount of gas from a compressed cylinder.
- Squeezing the Ambu bag raises pressure and decreases volume.
What are the application of Charles’ Law?
- The inflatable cuff of an endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask airway expands during sterilaization in an autoclave.
What are the application of Gay-Lussac’s Law?
- When the temperature of a closed cylinder increases, cylinder pressure increases.
- When the temperature of a closed cylinder decreases, cylinder pressure decreases.
- As a cylinder containing liquid N2O empties, temperature decreases (Joule-Thompson effect); as temperature decreases, the pressure of N2O within the tank decreases.
- Wood’s metal blows when temperature increases substantially.
What are the application for the Ideal gas law?
- As a cylinder of compressed gas empties, the pressure in the cylinder falls (because the number of moles, n, in the tank is decreasing).
What is the application Dalton’s Law?
- Permits calculation of the % concentration of a gas by dividing the partial pressure of the gas by the total pressure.
- Permits calculation of the partial pressure of a gas by multiplying % concentration by total pressure.
What is the application of Joule-Thompson Effect?
- As a cylinder of compressed gas empties, the cylinder cools; condensation and ice crystals may be seen.
- The cryoprobe operates on the basis of the Joule-Thompson effect.
