Gas Exchange and Circulation Flashcards
Definition of lungs
Infolding to the body surface
The circulatory system of lungs
can be open or closed
transports gases between lungs and rest of body
What does the size and complexity of the lungs correlate with?
animal’s metabolic rate
Explain the process of negative pressure breathing in birds
- breathes in to posterior air sac
- breathes out to lungs
- breathes in to anterior air sac
- breathes out air fully
Explain the negative pressure breathing in humans
Air inhaled- lungs and ribs expand
Air exhaled- rib cage and lungs get smaller
Breathing is a _____ feedback loop.
negative
Explain the process of a negative feedback loop
organs - carbon dioxide - carbon dioxide binding - removes excess carbon dioxide - lungs - oxygen from pulmonary alveolus - red blood cell - back to organs organs
Why do we need a respiratory system?
we need O2 in for aerobic respiration and to make ATP
we need CO2 out for waste product from krebs cycle
How does the diffusion of gases work?
it is a concentration gradient where pressure drives movement of gases into and out of blood at lungs and body tissue.
Homeostasis: definition and needs
Keeping internal environment of body balanced.
need to balance O2 in and CO2 out
need to balance energy (ATP) production
Needs for exercising
we breathe faster so we need more ATP, we need to bring in extra O2 and remove extra CO2
Needs for disease
causes us to breathe faster which makes us need to work harder to bring in 02 and remove CO2
