Gamete production and fertilisation (2.1) Flashcards
What cells are sperm produced from?
Germline cells.
What is the function of the urethra?
Release sperm.
Name the structure in which sperm cells are produced?
Testes.
Name the cells which secrete testosterone?
Interstitial cells.
Where are sperm cells produced?
In the Seminiferous tubules in the testes.
What is the function of the testes?
Produce sperm and testosterone.
What is the function of the prostate gland and the seminal vesicle?
Secrete fluids to maintain mobility and viability of sperm.
What is the function of the sperm duct?
Transports sperm from the testes to the urethra.
What does seminal fluid and sperm produce
Semen.
What does the seminal fluid provide the sperm with?
Fructose (High energy sugar) for the sperm cells to swim.
What type of cell division produces gametes?
Meiosis.
What cells are testosterone produced in?
Interstitial cells.
What is the function of the cervix?
Secretes cervical mucus.
What is the function of the uterus?
Site of implantation; and where an embryo develops.
What is the function of the Oviduct?
Site of fertilisation.
What is the function of the ovary?
Produces and stores ova/eggs.
What are ova (eggs) formed from?
Germline cells.
What is each ovum surrounded by and what does this do?
Surrounded by a follicle that protects the developing embryo.
What is a fertilised egg/ova known as?
A Zygote.
What hormones does the Ovaries release?
Progesterone and oestrogen.
What is a corpus luteum?
After ovulation, the follicle develops into a corpus luteum; which secretes progesterone.
