Gait I & II Flashcards
Stride
Time between when one foot touches the floor and when the same foot touches the floor again
Stride length
Distance in gait cycle
Step
One half of a stride
Step length
Distance between heel strike of. One foot and heel strike of other floor (should be equal)
Cadence
Walking speed
Stance phase
Activity when the foot is in contact with the ground
- 60% of gait cycle
Swing phase
Activity when the foot is not in contact with the ground
- 40% of gait cycle
Weight acceptance
When foot touches ground and body weight starts to shift onto that leg
- early in stance phase
Leg advancement
When the leg opposite the stance leg swings forward
- swing phase
Single support
Period when only one foot is in contact with the ground
Double support
Period when both feet are in contact with the ground at the same time
Stance phase of gait (list both traditional and ranchos los amigos)
- Heel strike — initial contact
- Foot flat — loading response
- Medstance — midstance
- Heel-off — terminal stance
- Toe-off — preswing
Swing phase of gait (list both traditional and ranchos los amigos)
- Acceleration — initial swing
- Mid swing — midswing
- Deceleration — terminal swing
Vertical displacement
Normal raising and lowering of the COG during gait
- approx. 2 inches (highest at midstance and lowest at heel strike or initial contact)
Horizontal displacement
Normal lateral shifting of COG during gait as body weight shifts from side to side
- approx 2 inches (greatest during midstance)
Initial contact
Heel strike
- beginning of stance phase, weight acceptance begins, double leg support beings
- begin: when heel contacts ground
- end: at beginning of loading response
Loading response
Foot flat
- end of double leg support
- begin: weight shifted on to the limb and entire foot makes contact w/ground
- end: when opposite foot leaves the ground
Midstance
Midstance
- single leg support begins
- begin: opposite foot leaves the ground
- end: when body is directly over WB limb
Termal stance
Heel off
- body passes beyond stance leg, single limb support ends (double limb support starts)
- begin: as heel of WB limb rises
- end: at initial contact of opposite foot
Preswing
Toe off
- brief time of double limb support
- begin: initial contact of opposite leg and when weight is shifted onto opposite leg
- end: just before the toes of WB limb leave the ground
Initial swing
Acceleration
- beginning of swing phase
- begin: toes leave ground
- end: when swing foot is opposite the WB foot and the knee is in max flexion
Midswing
Midswing
- max knee flexion for clearance required
- begin: when swing foot is opposite WB foot
- end: swing leg is in front of body w/ tibia vertical to ground
Terminal swing
Deceleration
- single lime support ends
- begin: when tibia is vertical to ground
- end: just prior to initial contact
