A
Application of kinesiology to use of the body in daily life activities and to the prevention and correction of problems related to posture and lifting

Why use proper mechanics?
A
- hand injury is second most common work-related MSK injury amount PTs
- up to 90% of PTs have work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) during their careers, 50% within 5 years
- manual therapy, lifting, and transferring pts
- avoid excessive fatigue to support musculature and avoid overuse injuries
- avoid injuries to you, staff, pt

Basic principles
A
- COG must be stable
- BOS must be stable
- keep vertical line of support
- maintain proper alignment

Proper techniques
A
BEFORE beginning a lift 1. Check the environment 2. Plan ahead 3. Plan team work (dont try more than you are able and know when you are in over your head) LIFTING 1. Bend at knees and hips 2. Maintain neutral curves of spine 3. Lift straight up, no twisting or turning 4. Keep object as close as possible

Proper REACHING techniques
A
- Be in front and as close as possible to object
- Use step stool if necessary
- Maintain safe BOS
- Avoid twisting

Proper TURNING techniques
A
- Maintain COG
- Turn trunk and hips together
- Never twist!

General guidelines
A
- pull, push, or roll before attempting a lift
- keep movements smooth
- keep object close to COG
- lift with legs, not back
- stay in good condition

Patient considerations
A
- what/who is to be moved and where?
- is the environment clear?
Bed locked - proper foot wear - clear floor - pt medically stable - do you feel comfortable with the situation?
