Gait Cycle Flashcards
Weak dorsiflexors cause a _____ ______ during foot flat of the gait cycle (2nd stance phase). What can cause this?
Foot (Slap) Drop - caused by L4 lesion
Paralyzed dorsiflexors lead to ______ _____ at the midswing of the gait cycle (the 2nd phase of swing). What can cause this?
Toe Strike - can be caused by Deep fibular nerve injury
What would have someone do a “Steppage Gait”?
If that person is not able to Dorsiflexion or extend toes and can only “weakly” invert his or her foot, there is a Deep Fibular nerve injury leading to Toe Strike. The steppage gait is done to compensate for that.
If someone were to do a “Circumducted Gait”, what can that person be compensating for?
Compensation for Foot Drop if there is a limit to dorsiflexion or eversion of the foot, such as from a lesion of the Common Fibular nerve. The deep fibular nerve affects the anterior dorsiflexors, while the superficial fibular nerve affects the lateral evertors.
What signs does a lesion of the common fibular nerve present?
Weak inversion of the foot and no ability to dorsiflex nor extend the toes.
One gait cycle is covered in ____ steps and consists of a stance phase which occurs ______% of the time (if walking), and a swing phase that occurs ______% of the time.
1 Gait cycle = 2 steps;
Stand (60%) and Swing (40%)
As a jogger accelerates from a walk to a brisk run, his swing face _______, while his stand phase _________.
Swing increases >50%,
Stand decreases <50%
The body compensates for a weak gluteus maximus by _________ back when walking. This Gluteus maximus gait is commonly seen with people with _________ ________.
Lean back;
Muscular dystrophy or polio
A patient sustains a blunt force to the anterior thigh. He notices that he has to lean forward and push the femur backward with each forward step. What nerve was lesioned and how is he compensating?
Femoral nerve (L2-L4) lesion; Quadriceps gait, where the he or she fully extends the knee and locks it by pushing on the femur.
A positive Trendelenberg sign is indicative of what weak muscles? What nerve may be injured to result in this finding?
Weak gluteus minimus and medius muscles may indicate damage to the superior gluteal nerve.
What type of gait would someone in physical rehab use to compensate for a foot drop? What nerve was damage to result in his condition?
Circumducted Gait compensates for weak dorsiflexors and foot evertors. The common fibular nerve may have been damaged.
A patient with Muscular Dystrophy would lean back to show a _____ ______, thus using the ________ ligaments to assist in support of the body weight at the hips.
Lumbar lordosis (Gluteus maximus gait); Iliofemoral ligaments
