Gait Flashcards
Initial contact/Heel Strike
Hip = hip extensors (glute max) and glute abductors (glute med/min) stabilize trunk/pelvis
Knee = knee flexors (hamstrings) concentric, knee extensors (quads) eccentric
Ankle = Dorsiflexors (tibialis anterior) eccentric
Loading Response/Foot flat
Hip = hip extensors (glute max) concentric
Knee = knee extensors (quads) eccentric to concentric (femur over tibia)
Ankle = Dorsiflexors (Tibialis anterior) concentric; Plantarflexors (gastroc/soleus) eccentric; Supination (Tibialis posterior)
Midstance
Hip = Hip flexors (iliopsoas) eccentric; hip abductors (glute med/min) pelvis stability
Knee = knee extensors (quad) concentric in CKC extension
Ankle = Plantarflexors (gastroc/soleus) eccentric to control DF
Terminal Stance/Heel Off
Hip = Hip flexors (iliopsoas) eccentric; hip abductors (glute med/min) pelvis stability
Knee = knee extensors (quad) concentric in CKC extension
Ankle = plantarflexors (gastroc/soleus) concentric to bring body forward
Pre-Swing/Toe Off
Hip = hip flexors (iliopsoas) concentric
Knee = knee flexors (hamstrings) concentric to knee flexion in swing phase to bring body fwd
Ankle = plantarflexors at peak “toes off”, 1st MTP 70 deg
Initial Swing/Acceleration
Hip = hip flexors (iliopsoas) concentric
Knee = knee flexors (hamstrings) at 60 deg to “clear foot”
Ankle = maintain concentric dorsiflexion (tibialis anterior) to “clear foot”
Midswing
Hip = hip flexors (iliopsoas) concentric
Knee = knee flexors (hamstrings) at 60 deg to “clear foot”
Ankle = maintain concentric dorsiflexion (tibialis anterior) to “clear foot”
Terminal Swing/Deceleration
Hip = hip extensors (glute max) eccentric slow rate of hip flexion concentric
Knee = knee extensors concentric, knee flexors (hamstrings) eccentric to control rate of knee extension
Ankle = dorsiflexors (tibialis anterior) concentric to maintain DF
