Create change, curiosity, relevance (offer an example or demonstration).
Event 1: Gain attention.
Focus attention of learner. Prepare for what is to come. Create order. Opportunity for advance organizer.
Event 2: Describe the objectives.
Create memory retrieval, attempt to link to a familiar task.
Event 3: Stimulate recall of prior knowledge.
Offer: inductive vs. deductive decisions. Clarity. What features are emphasized? What examples are used?
Event 4: Present material.
Offer: Cues, hints, direction or lack of them? Suggest organization and metacognitive devices?
Event 5: Provide guidance.
Practice
Event 6: Elicit performance.
Offer: Reinforcement, satiation, best feedback is “natural,” like when car starts up. Kinds: natural, adequacy, summative & formative (prompting).
Event 7: Provide feedback.
Activate retrieval, reliable proof of skill (not by chance), valid (reflect the objective?), chance for feedback.
Event 8: Assess performance.
Offer: Organization and context. Over-learning.
Event 9: Enhance transfer & retention.
