G541: Observations Flashcards
Covert
Participants are unaware they’re being observed
What is time sampling?
Researcher notes behaviours observed over set periods of time at set intervals
Participant
Observer is a part of the action they’re observing
Non participant
Observer doesn’t take part in the action they’re observing
Event
Researcher records the number of times a specific behaviour occurs throughout the whole duration of the observation using a checklist
Overt
Participants aware they’re being observed
Unstructured
All behaviour is recorded throughout the whole duration of the observation
Structured
Systematic, may be timed or event using a predetermined checklist
Operational definition
Deciding what counts as an example of a behaviour (for a behaviour checklist)
Privacy
Must be in a public place NOT using recording devices
Informed consent, if not debrief
10 markers
Who? Pps/non pps/sample What? Behaviour to observe Where? Location When? Time/day How? Structured/un covert/overt
How to ensure an observation has inter-rater reliability?
- Train observers before hand
- Operational definition(ensure all observers know what counts as a specific behaviour)
- pilot study
How to improve validity of an observation?
Make it covert, therefore pps unaware and will act naturally
