G541: Experiments Flashcards
Order effects
•practise •bordom •fatigue -errors begin to arise due to order ONLY with repeated measure design
Field
Natural environment
•high eco validity
•IV is manipulated
Operationalising the IV&DV
Making it measurable
Confounding Variables
Variables which cannot be controlled as it may be unethical, impractical or impossible (if it’s unknown)
Demand characteristics
Pps aware of the aim which can influence their behaviour/ they act in a way to display behaviour which they think is expected of them
One tailed hypothesis
There will be a significant increase/decrease in x and y
•directional
Do experimental methods manipulate the IV&DV
Yes- to demonstrate a casual relationship
Two tailed hypothesis
There will be a significant relationship between X and Y
•but direction is unknown
Quasi experiment
Naturally occurring IV
•used to study real life problems
Null hypothesis
•predicts that there will be no relationship
There will be no difference in X and Y
Repeated Measures Design
Participants take part in both conditions
Experimenter Bias
Any cues from the experimenter which may encourage certain behaviours, leading participants to fulfil the experimenters expectations
• experiment is therefore more likely to see results which they’d hoped for
Independent measures design
Participants take part in one condition
Matched pairs design
Participants are matched on variables e.g age/gender/intelligence in order to reduce the effect of individual differences
Extraneous Variables
Anything other than the IV which has an effect on the DV
•situational
•pps variables
