the form of the story
Narrative structure
the manner of presenting the elements of the story.
Narrative structure
Another term for narrative structure is
plot
However, the said term is also used to refer to an element of the narrative that means
(plot)

do not follow rules of space and time
events are chronologically disordered
they can start and end at any point in the plotline
Nonlinear narratives
are interruptions in the narrative wherein events in the past, which are the characters’ memories, are narrated
Flashbacks
thrust the narrative to a future time, creating a lapse between the present and future
Flash-forwards
is used more often in movies than in novels
Nonlinear narrative technique
narrative begins at a crucial situation that is part of a related chain of events
the story moves forward then supplies earlier events through flashbacks.
originated from Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey in 7th BC
In medias res (in the midst of things)
a narrative technique used in literature and cinema
disrupts the flow of the story by injecting events of earlier occurrence, often disclosed through memories of the characters
the _ technique is as old as Western literature
Flashback
a narrative technique in which events of future occurrence are injected in the narrative
the story jumps from the present to the future, leaving the events that happened in between a mystery in readers’ minds
crime or detective shows sometimes jump to the results or aftermath before resuming the normal process of the investigation
Flash-forward
tell a story within a story through multiple narrators
bring multiple story arcs together instead of having just one overarching story and a single point of view
Multiple narratives
uses several narrators or explains a single incident from multiple perspectives to uncover different sides of the same story
key events are told from different perspectives, and reflect the biases or machinations of the character whose perspective is used
Multiple perspectives
multiple story lines that share themes or characters
Intersecting storylines
told through the use of letters, journal entries, or another character telling the story
Story within a story
a story set within a story, narrative, or movie, told by the main or the supporting character to other characters in the story
Frame story
technique provides readers with a context about the main narrative through embedded narratives
frame narrative
the frame narrative technique provides readers with a context about the main narrative through embedded narratives
leads the readers from the one story to another as it establishes the context for the stories within
Frame story
A multiple narrative can also be achieved by telling one story from different points in time
Story at different times
pays no heed to time, outside stimuli, or traditional conventions
method of narration that describes in words the flow of thoughts in the minds of the characters
developed by a group of writers at the beginning of the 20th century
aims to give readers the impression of being inside the mind of the character
Stream of consciousness
reader is guided through the thoughts, emotions, and senses of the main character, Stephen Dedalus, as he develops from infancy to early adulthood
will conclude where it began
closure is achieved through a return to theme and material rather than a conclusion
literal repetition of phrases or syntax as the beginning of the story or returning to a setting helps bring the story to a close
Circular narrative
