Dowels

A

short pieces of rebar used to connect two separate cast-in-place concrete sections. can be smooth or deformed rebar. can also be inserted by hand after concrete is poured *make sure not to go through into soil.

Q

Penetration od dowels

A

if not specified by engineer multiply diameter of bar by 24 then multiply that by 2.

fo is rebar is 12mm in diameter go
12 x 24 = 288
then
288x2 = 576mm

Q

Smooth dowels

A

Expansion joints use smooth dowels to keep slabs in alignment. the dowels hold both slabs in place vertically but allow them to move horizontally.

Q

Anchorage

A

embedded metals are anchored to concrete by deformed rods, bolts or bent bars. these anchors are welded to the back of the metal components.

Q

Weld plates

A

pre cast construction methods use weld-plates to connect sections. plates embedded in footings and embedded in wall section are welded together after being placed.

Q

Raglet

A

a Raglet is a continuous groove that is cut or formed into a wall (usually above a point of intersection with a flat roof) flashing is caulked into the raglet to keep everything waterproof.

usually 25mm deep

19
Q

How are Raglets formed?

A

formed by nailing a wooden strip to inside of form-board.

20
Q

Manufactured raglets

A

PVC raglets can be fastened to inside of form board.

21
Q

Metal or PVC wall mounted raglets

A

these are attached directly to the wall after its finished. then flashing snaps into it.

22
Q

Metal frame in concrete

sewer access cover frames

A

barrel shaped concrete shaft descending from the street or floor level to the storm sewer main.

23
Q

Pit mounted dock levers

A

formework for this is incorporated into a box that is set into the surface of a concrete slab. it will be incased with concrete on all five sides.

the five sided form will act like a boat and float in concrete so it will be needed to be braced or weighted down.

24
Q

Cast in place doc levers

A

require little or no forming. they must be set in place very accurately and securely braced.

25
Q

Controls for dock levers

A

normally located far from dock lever. conduit pipe must be laid in slab so that wires cable fed to control panel.

26
Q

Water stops

A

made from plastic or rubber. these are positioned along construction joints between two separate placements of concrete to prevent water seepage dude to hydronic pressure.

27
Q

dumbell waterstop

A

used where significant water seepage is expected.

28
Q

Serrated waterstop

A

used where differential settlement is expected and a firm grip in concrete is required.

29
Q

Caulk waterstop

A

waterstop that is not secured into the formwork.

it is applied over the construction joint after it is poured.

30
Q

wooden door jambs

A

opening formed by wood in formwork. fasted to wooden keys also formed into concrete.

31
Q

when forming wooden door buck make sure to?

A

brace vertically and horizontally so weight of concrete does not bend or twist buck.

32
Q

Metal door jambs

A

either knocked down (KD) or welded and ready to instal. both types can be used in concrete or masonry walls before or after wall is constructed.

33
Q

Procedure for installing steel jamb in concrete form.

A
  1. set pre assembled jam closely against one side on concrete form.
  2. thoroughly brace frames as shown to keep it from bending.
  3. plug all holes with rubber stoppers so concrete doesn’t leak through
  4. if jamb is thinner than wall install wooden pack out strips.
34
Q

Installing metal jamb in masonry wall

A

you must carefully brace and support and level the jamb in such a way that does not interfere with the mason.

35
Q

what are different to headers in block walls

A

extra deep header to make up the difference in height between regular door height and the blocks in wall.

36
Q

Fastener strength

A

usually made with materials that are stronger than the materials they are getting fastened to.

37
Q

Expansion shields

A

are used with lag bolts to fasten items to concrete. they expand once pounded into concrete

38
Q

Lead plug

A

similar to expansion shields but used for lighter loads.

39
Q

Wedge, sleeve or drop in anchors

A

anchors are inserted into holes drilled into the concrete. the size of hole must match the size of anchor. as the bolt tightened the anchor spreads.

40
Q

Insulation attachments

A

these are for light duty functions. attaching insulation materials to concrete.

41
Q

Pin bolt

A

(used to put strapping on 1st street) anchor is placed into a predrilled hole in concrete and pin is driven into sleeve that holds the strapping.

42
Q

Tapcon anchors

A

known for its ease of installation.

  1. drill hole 1/4” deeper then needed
43
Q

Adhesive anchor

A

uses polyester resin to glue fastener into place. a glass capsule of resin is placed into hole then the anchor stud is used to break it.

44
Q

Powder-actuated fasteners

A

fasteners are designed to penetrate concrete or mild steel.
