Fungi Flashcards
Features of fungi
Heterotrophic
Eukaryotic
Have cell walls made of chitin
Made up of hyphae which combine to form a mycelium
Two types of fungi
Parasitic
Saprophytic
Parasitic fungi
Absorb food from live hosts.
Get food mostly from plants eg mildews.
Some live on humans eg: athlete’s foot.
Saprophytic fungi
Cause decay eg mushrooms
Are decomposers-vital
Edible fungi
Mushrooms and truffles
Poisonous fungi
Death cap fungus and destroying angel.
Symbiosis
Symbiotic fungi form relationships with other organisms.
Lichen
A combination of a fungus and an alga.
What is rhizopus
Black brad mould.
A saprophyte.
Has tubes called hyphae which form a mycelium.
How do rhizopus reproduce
Asexually by spores.
Sexually when nuclei from different mycelia fuse to form zygospores. Zygospores remain dormant til conditions are suitable for growth.
What is yeast
A single celled fungus.
Yeast reproduction
Asexually by budding.
Nucleus of parent cells divides by mitosis, 1 daughter nucleus enters small developing bud on outside of yeast cell. Can separate from parent to become new individual.
Anaerobic yeast reproduction
Forms ethanol and carbon dioxide
Economic benefits of fungi
Produces alcohol
Mushrooms are edible
Economic disadvantages of fungi
Destroy food (rhizopus) and crops. Cause diseases.
