a method of closure that utilizes the air pressure created by placing the dome of the vault onto the base of the vault, often called the diving bell principle
Air seal
a transfer container consisting of wooden tray with a cardboard covering for the casket
Air tray
a substance composed of two or more metals
Alloy
an unfinished wood box or other non-metal receptacle or enclosure, without ornanmentation or a fixed interior lining, which is designed for the encasement of human remains and which is made of fiberboard, pressed wood, composition materials (with or without an outside covering) or like materials.
Alternative container
The lining is attached to the undersurface of the foot panel of the casket and/or a component part of the throw (overlay), which extends downward into the body of the casket
Apron
The part of the casket handle that attaches the bar to the lug (ear)
Arm
The sum of a group of numbers divided by the number of units
Average (mean)
A single handle in which the lug, arm, and bar are combined in one unit
Bail handle
That part of the casket handle, attached to the lug or arm, which is grasped by the casketbearer.
Bar
The lower or supporting part of a monument. In some monuments, there may be a first, second, and third base.
Base
Molding along the lowermost edge of the body panels
Base molding
The portion of the casket upon which the deceased human remains are placed
Bed
A type of cemetery memorial consisting of top piece supported by two standards, used to identify family burial plots or used in conjunction with a family monument
Bench
A small headstone, set above ground, with a slightly slanting top.
Bevel top marker
typically a stand upon which casket is placed for viewing and services, but sometimes a means of merchandise display
Bier
a method of price quotation showing separately the price of the service to be rendered and the price of the casket.
Bi-unit pricing
a subdivision of cemetery containing several lots
Block
that portion of the casket shell containing the top body molding, body panel, base molding, and casket bottom
Body
a molding along the uppermost edge of the body panels
Body ledge (top body molding)
the horizontal portion of the top body molding (body ledge) where the gasket is placed on gasketed caskets
Body ledge flange (top body molding flange)
material which drapes the inside perimeter of the body of the casket
Body lining
compose the sides and ends of the casket shell
Body panels
component part of cap/lid that is constructed into caskets that display a cut top, provides strength/rigidity at the point of the transverse cut
Bridge (header, cap filler)
a twilled, napped, woolen, or worsted fabric with a smooth lustrous face and dense texture, a fabric usually made of cotton, silk, rayon woven in a plain or rib weave with a soft semi-gloss finish
Broadcloth
a metal alloy consisting of 90% copper with tin and sometimes zinc comprising the other 10%
Bronze
bare metal is scratched with an abrasive material and then finished until a smooth high gloss is obtained
Brushed finish
a casket which is sold for the purpose of interring or entombing with the dead human remains.
Burial casket
the top most part of the casket shell, including the ogee, crown, pie, and header
Cap (lid)
the focal part of the interior which fills the inside of the crown, sometimes bordered by the roll (cove) may be reffered to as a panel.
Cap panel
a reduction of the price given for payment of an account within the time established by the sale contract
Cash discount
devices used to present caskets in the selection room or visitation area. Typically, the distance from floor to bottom of caskets 26” to 30” or consistent with height of device used in visitation area
Casket display equipment
a removable metal unit that is placed inside a wooden casket shell to provide protective qualities
Casket liner
a device upon which caskets are placed, one on top of the other, for display or storage
Casket rack
the stand or support upon which a casket rests in the selection room
Casket stand (casket standard)
molten bronze poured into a mold and allowed to cool
Cast bronze
the most expensive hardware production method in which molten metal is poured into a mold, allowed to cool, and is then removed from the mold.
Cast hardware
an area of ground set aside and dedicated for the final dispostion of dead human bodies
Cemetery
a monument erected to the memory of the dead, with the dead human body not present
Cenotaph
a wheeled collapsible support for the casket used in the funeral home, church, or home.
Church truck
a case or receptacle for dead human remains which is anthropidal in shape
Coffin
a structure, room, or space in a mausoleum or other bulding containing niches, or recesses used to hold cremated remains.
Columbarium
a transfer container consisting of a particle board box with a cardboard tray and cover to satisfy air shipping regulations
Comdination case ( aka “combo”)
any product consisting of unit or a series of units which are designed or intended to be used
Combination unit
particles of wood bonded together with waterproof glue, the different types are distinguished by the size and shape of the particles of wood used
Compostion board (particle board, pressed board, fiberboard, hardboard)
a grave liner consisting of six or eight slabs of unfinised concrete placed around the casket
Concrete sectional (sectional)
placing caskets for selection in their order of increasing or decreasing value
Consecutive method
to give to an agent to be cared for or sold ex. funeral director has merchandise to display but does not pay for it until it is sold
Consigment
a malleable, ductile, metallic, element having a characteristic reddish brown color, frequently used in construction of caskets, urns, and valuts due to its noncorrosive qualities
Copper
a casket made from a core of copper metal to which copper ions are combinded by an electrolytic process
Copper deposit
an optional part of the casket hardware that is attached to the four corners of the body panel
Corner
a container used to hold a dead human body which is constructed out of a type of cardboard, which is made with a series of alternate folds and ridges
Corrugated container
a component part of the casket interior which lines the rim (ogee) and surrounds the cap panel
Cove (roll, puffing)
an environmentally safe casket which is designed for encasing dead human remains for cremation
Cremation casket
a thin crinkled cloth of silk, rayon, cotton, or wool
Crepe
an exterior casket finish in which the metal is coated with a substance that wrinkles as it dries, usually used on less expensive caskets
Crinkled finished
the uppermost part of the casket cap extending from rim to rim, everything above the rim
Crown (swell)
a form of casket interior created by placing the lining material on a metal form, weights added, the material steamed, and the attached to a suitable upholstery (backing) material
Crushed interior
three or four caskets utilizied to educate the selecting party regarding the elements of cakset construction.
Demonstation group (educational group)
main part of a monument, the upright portion above the base where the inscription is located
Die (tablet)
a dispostion of human remains by cremation without formal viewing, visitation or ceremony with the body present
Direct cremation
illumination directly shining on a object
Direct lighting
thew method of selling merchandise whereby the funeral director remains in the selection room throughout the selection process
Direct selection room procedure
a heavy durable cotton fabric with a short (1/8 inch or less), thick, velvety nap on one side, woven cloth with a suede-like appearance with a nap of less than 1/8th inch.
Doeskin (moleskin)
the top of an air seal burial vault which entraps air as it is position, it also supports the weight of the earth above
Dome
a method of closure the utilizes the principle of the air seal in conjuction with an epoxy material at the junction of the dome and the base of the vault
Double seal
the part of the casket handle that is attached to the casket body
Ear (lug)
a casket having ends in the shape of a half circle
Elliptic
to ornament with raised work, to raise relief from the surface, material having designs raised above the surface, frequently seen on cloth covered caskets
Embossed
a range of derivative wood products, which are manufactured by binding together wood strands, particles, fibers, or veneers with adhesives to form composite materials. Sometimes referred to as composite wood or manufactured wood products
Engineered wood
an inscription placed on a monument to commemorate the deeds or qualities of the departed
Epitaph
wood has been shredded into spaghetti like strings
Excelsior (wood wool)
the portion of the casket interior which extends over the top body molding (body ledge) for aesthetic value
Extendover
any metal formed from iron (steel or stainless steel)
Ferrous metal
a material consisting of extremely fine filaments of glass embedded in various resins
Fiberglass
a price determination method whereby the casket cost is multipied by a constant factor
Fixed multiple
a casket shell design in which the sides and ends of the casket body flare out from the bottom than at the opening of the top
Flaring square
a finish used on casket exteriors that is free of gloss, dull, lusterless surface, no shine or gloss
Flat finish (Matte finish)
the illumination produced by a tubular electric discharge lamp, the fluorescence of phosphors coating the inside of tube
Fluorescent lighting
a small headstone which is set with its top even with the surrounding terrain
Flush marker
the wedge shaped portion of the cap (lid) at each end of the crown
Fishtail (pie)
a strip of metal, plastic, or cloth that is attached to the inside the foot portion of the cap
Foot panel
use of portions of caskets (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) in the selection room vs. full sized caskets
Fractional display
a method of price quotation in which the charges are broken down into several major component parts such as professional services, facilities, automobile and merchandise
Functional pricing
a service commemorating the deceased with the body present
Funeral ceremony
steel that has been coated with zinc for increased resistance to rust
Galavanized
found on cut top gasketed caskets, is an intergal part of the foot panel header and foot panel header on gasketed caskets. The function is to hold the transverse gasket to seal the space between the head and foot caps
Gasket channel
a measurment of thickness of metals, the number of sheets of metal necessary to equal approximately one inch of thickness
Gauge
a pricing method where the mark-up varies
Graduated recovery
an excavation in the earh as a place for interment
Grave
an outer enclosure consisting of a body and a one or two piece lid
Grave box
an outer enclosure, which offers protection from the earth load but without protection from the elements
Grave liner
a ceremony or ritual, religious or otherwise, conducted at the grave
Gravaeside service
a natural, eco-friendly approach to death care that utilizes products, services and merchandise that are free of toxic/hazardous materials, are biodegradable or that minimize use of energy
Green
a high intensity light source that produces a clean bright white light approximating natural daylight
Halogen lighing
a sprayed finish that has the appearance of small indentations in the metal (as if struck by a ballpeen hammer) the “indentations’ are in the paint and appear as the paint dries, usually found on inexpensive caskets
Hammertone finish
the handles, ornamental fixtures and their fittings that are attached to the casket shell
Hardware
any tough, heavy timber with a compact texture, any deciduous tree (any tree that loses its leaves annually)
Hardwood
the turned under edge or horizontal portion of the header of the casket cap
Header flange
a component part of the casket interior which is inside the head portion of the, no distinction is made between the head panel and foot panel in full couch caskets
Head panel
airtight, impervious to external influence, completely sealed by fusion of soldering
Hermetically sealed
that portion of the casket interior covering the hinges that attach the casket cap to the casket body, usually extends from the roll and becomes a part of the body lining
Hnge cover (hinge skirt)
a type of cemetery monumenet in which the die is wider than it is tall
Horizontal tablet
a dispostion of human remains by burial without formal viewing, visitation or ceremony with the body present, except for a graveside serivce
Immediate burial
the illumation of an object
Indirect lighting
the method of selling merchandise wheredby the funeral director does not stay in the selection room during the selection process
Indirect selection room procedure
functional or ornamental covering that usually covers the foot end of the casket in the full couch casket, may be located at both the head and of the full couch casket
Inner panels
the method of price quotation by which each unit of service and/or merchandise is priced separately
Itemization
made by uniting superimposed layers of different materials
Laminates
grave space where two or more persons may be buried in grave liners, which have been stacked one on top of the other with the first person who dies being buried in the deepest grave liner, with subsequent burials on top.
Lawncrypt
a fabric made from flax, noted for its strength, coolness, and luster
Linen
a subdivision of cemetery which consists of several graves or interment spaces
Lot
a small headstone, usually of one piece, used to identify individual graves
Marker
the difference between merchandise cost and selling price
Markup
pressed paper in sheet form used in casket construction as a backing (upholstery) material
Masselin
interior cloth or material which covers the mattress or bedding of the casket
Mattress cover
an above ground structure or building containing crypts or vaults for entombment of caskets which may also include niches for cremated remains
Mausoleum
a value in an ordered set of values which represents the midpoint, whereby there are an equal number of values above and below the midpoint value
Median
a physical object that is designed for the purpose of remembering
Memorial
a cemetery or section of cemetery with only flush to the ground type markers
Memorial park
a ceremony commemorating the deceased without the body present
Memorial service
the purchasing, pricing, display and sale or merchandise.
Merchandising
a gasketed container, which can be used as an insert into a casket or as a seperate shipping container
Metal case (Ziegler case)
the value that occurs most frequently in a group of numbers
Mode
a structure, usually of stone or metal, erected to commemorate the life, deeds, or career of a deceased person, derived from the Latin word meaning “to remind”
Monument
a recess or space in a columbarium used for the permanent placing of cremated remains. The aesthic covering for the foot cap or inner foot panel of the casket
Niche
any metal, which is not formed from iron
Non-ferrous metal
a casket having eight angles or corners and therefore has eight sides or body panels
Octagon
an “S” shaped molding that is a component part of the casket cap
Ogee (rim)
the turned under edge or horizontal portion of the casket rim which comes into contact with the gasket or body flange (top body molding flange)
Ogee flange (rim flange)
receptacle for commual placement of cremated remains
Ossuary
any container, which is designed for placement in the grave around the casket including, but not limited to, containers commonly known as burial value as burial vaults, grave boxes and grave liners.
Outer burial container
the aesthetic covering for the foot cap or inner foot panel of the casket
Overlay (overthrow, throw)
a pricing method, which groups together selected services and/or merchandise
Package pricing
a casket in which the rim (ogee), crown, and pies are formed as one unit and which opens as one piece
Perfection full couch
a casket in which the rim (ogee), crown, and pies are formed as one unit with a transverse cut in the cap, forming a two piece lid for the casket
Perfection half couch
a synthetic or natural organic material shaped when soft and then hardened
Plastic
a method of forming items by injecting molten plaastic into a die.
Plastic extrusion molding
the finish created when base metal is coated by another metal via an electrolytic process, often found on casket hardware, in case construction is identified by the term “deposit”, as in “copper deposit”
Plated finish
a woven cloth with a nap exceeding 1/8th inch
Plush
thin sheets of wood glued together so that the grains are at right angles to one another, an odd number of sheets will be used so that the grain on the front and back will always run the same direction
Plywood
a surface made smooth and glossy usually by friction, brought to a highly developed, finished, or refined state, burnished
Polished finish
a compound, similar in appearance to plastic, that has a high molecular weight creating an extremely durable substance
Polymer
a leak resistance zippered bag designed to contain a dead human body and body fluids and is used mainly for the removal of dead human remains from the place of death
Pouch
method used by management to establish the selling price for services and merchandise
Price determination
method by which prices are explained to consumer (ex. itemized GPL required by FTC, but package pricing allowed)
Price quotation
a casket opening style in which the cap or lid at the head end of the casket is completely removed from the casket for the purpose of viewing the remains may be viewed from either side of the casket
Priest casket (slip panel)
the amount, by which, the bill or invoice will be reduced when a minimum quantity of merchandise has been ordered
Quantity discount
a divison of the total into four segements, each one representing one-fourth of total.
Quartile
the upper and lower limits of a series of numbers
Range
the return of portion of a payment
Rebate
a casket which is used as a temporary receptacle for the dead human remains for the purpose of visitation and funeral with the intention that the remains will be placed in some other suitabe container for permanent disposition, while the casket is intended to be reused
Rental casket
the number of times sales in a given price bracket to occur over a fixed period of time
Sales frequency
the number of times sales in a given price bracket occur over a fixed period of time
Sales frequency
a fabric woven to create a smooth lustrous face and dull back
Satin
a type of semi-luster or semi-gloss casket finish that is smooth with well defined, fine lines or striations
Satin finish
a section in a cemetery set aside for the scattering of cremated human remains

a subdivison of a cemetery containing several blocks

a combination of a tailored interior with one or more other styles of interior for effect
Semi-tailored interior
the component parts of the casket comprised of the cap (lid) and body of the casket
Shell
a style of casket interior in which the material is drawn or gathered in parallel fashion in a multiple needle head sewing process
Shirred interior
a casket in which the cap is in two pieces. The rim (ogee) and foot panel is one piece which is hinged to the top body molding and the head panel being the second piece which is hinged to the rim (ogee)
Single hinged panel
a cemetery marker that has a face that has an angle greater than 45 degrees but less than 90 degrees in relationship to the terrain
Slant marker
any light, easily cut wood, cone bearing or coniferous
Softwood
a product that, excepting some hardware components, is made from lumber cut into boards from the trunk of a tree, the casket shell has no components formed from wood by products
Solid wood
a metal alloy of steel, chromium, and sometimes nickel, which is used in casket construction noted for its ability to resist rust
Stainless steel
a hardware production method whereby the casket hardware sections are pressed out on a hydraulic press, usually a less expensive method of production than cast hardware
Stamped hardware
casket in which the body panels are at a 90 degree angle to the bottom and the corners form 90 degree angles
State casket (vertical side square)
a non-moveable casket handle
Stationary bar
a metal alloy consisting mainly of iron and carbon used in caskets it is low in carbon which keeps it soft (mild) and malleable, commerical steel contains carbon in an amount up to 1.7% as an essential alloying constituent. May be referred to as carbon steel based upon the percentage of carbon in the alloy.

Swing bar
a tightly drawn form of casket interior style

a screw type fastener
Threaded fastener
the decorative or ornamental part of the casket handle that covers the exposed ends of the bar
Tip
a method of closure that utilizes an expoxy compound in conjuction with tongue in groove construction at the top edge and the lid of the vault
Top seal
an outer enclosure utilized for the protection of casketed remains during transporation
Transfer container
a style of casket interior created by placing a padding material between a lining material and a backing material, with subsquent stitiches taken, forming small raised puffs. Carriage tufting and biscuit tufting are the twom most common types used in caskets.
Tufted interior
a method of price quotation in which one price includes both service and casket
Unit pricing
a container for cremated remains, a vase with a foot or pedestal
Urn
a casket design in which the body panels display the shaoe of an urn
Urnside
an outer enclosure which offers protection from the earth load as well as other protective qualities
Vault
a fabric of silk, cotton, and possibly rayon, with a nap typically found in higher quality caskets
Velvet
a type of cemetry monument in which the die is taller than it is wide
Vertical tablet
time set aside for friends and relatives to pay respect for the deceased prior to the funeral service
Visitation (calling hours, visiting hours)
created by gluing a thin layer of wood of superior value or excellent grain to an interior wood
Wood veneer

Wrought bronze
