Fundoscopy Flashcards
what number cranial nerve is the optic nerve
cranial nerve 2
what is the diameter of the cranial nerve
0.8-2mm
what is hypermetropic
small eye ball, small optic disc, long sightedness
how many nerve axons in optic nerve at birth
1.5 million - decreases as get older
when looking at fundoscope what must you describe
the colour, contour and cup of the optic disc
what is the normal colour of the optic disc
pinky orange
why is the optic disc lighter than the rest of the eye
as axons here myelinated- myelin is white
what is optic atrophy
they death of the axons or vasculature in optic disc - causes disc to become white
what can cause the contour of the optic disc to become blurred
papilloedema + others- dont assume its this as very specific to raised ICP
will papilloedema be in one / both eyes
always both
what is the cup in the optic disc
gap in the middle of the optic disc
what can cause cupping (the cup to get bigger)
loss of axons- glaucoma
where will a pathology that affects the vertical median be
after the chiasm
pathologies where affect the horizontal median of vision
optic nerve
what are the steps of assessing visual fields
cover each eye any parts missing from hands/ face
cover your own eye aswell and: ask to count fingers (hold hands in quadrants and put fingers up)
say to say when they see cotton bud coming in from peripheral to central
check blind spot (with red thing as central vision more sensitive to red light)
