Fundamentals Of Genetics Flashcards
Heredity
The transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring.
Genetics
The field of biology devoted to understanding how characteristics are transmitted from parents to offspring
Blending hypothesis
A widely accepted hypothesis is that preceded the work of Mendel, which states that traits of parents are blended or mixed in offspring.
Characteristics
An inherited feature (example: seed shape)
Trait
Various forms of a characteristics (example: spherical and wrinkled)
Closed structure
Pea flower permits self-fertilization and once the anther is removed the closed structure of the pea flower makes it easy to control the origin of pollen to allow the experimenter to cross-pollinate.
Presence of distinctive traits
The pea plant has only 7 characteristics in 2 contrasting traits (no other variations of each trait)
Rapid reproductive cycle
The pea plant reproduces rapidly (90 days) produces a number of offspring and the offspring grow rather quickly.
Self pollination
Occurs when pollen is transferred from the anthers to the stigma of the same flower on the same plant.
Cross-pollination
When pollen is removed from one plant and is transferred to another plant of the same species.
