Fundamentals of Flight Flashcards
What is straight and level flight?
Maintaining constant heading and altitude
What are the objectives in learning straight and level flight maneuvers?
Proper use of controls
Using outside references and flight instruments (integrated flight instruction)
Dividing attention
What are some common student errors in straight and level flight?
Failure to crosscheck/correctly interpret outside references and fight instruments
Fixation on instruments
Control movements, rather than pressures
Uncoordinated use of controls (especially rudder)
Faulty trim procedures (failure/excessive use of trim, trimming before establishing pitch attitude/power setting)
Describe a level turn.
Used to change, or return to, aircraft heading
Involves use of ailerons, elevator, and rudder
What are the steps for making a level turn?
Roll into banked attitude with coordinated use of aileron and rudder
Neutralize aileron and rudder once at desired bank angle
Apply back pressure to compensate for loss of vertical lift
Roll out by coordinated use of aileron and rudder
What are some common student errors in performing level turns?
Failure to crosscheck/correctly interpret outside references and fight instruments
Fixation on instruments
Control movements, rather than pressures
Uncoordinated use of controls (especially rudder/slipping or skidding)
Faulty altitude and bank control (incorrect elevator pressure/varied bank angle)
Describe straight climbs and climbing turns.
Straight climb-gain of altitude while flying straight ahead
Climbing turn-gain of altitude while changing direction
What are the steps of a straight climb/climbing turn?
Apply back elevator to establish climb pitch attitude
Simultaneously establish desired bank angle (climbing turn)
Apply full power and pitch for Vy
Crosscheck nose/horizon with instruments
Trim for Vy
Use right rudder to counteract torque effect
What are some common student errors in straight climbs/climbing turns?
Failure to crosscheck outside references and instruments (fixation on instruments)
Control movements, rather than control pressures
Uncoordinated use of flight controls
Faulty trim procedures
Describe descents and descending turns.
Descent-airplane changes flightpath from level to inclined plane
Descending turn-change of flightpath accompanied by a change in heading
What are the 3 types of descents?
Partial power descent
Descent at minimum airspeed
Power-off glide
What are the steps of descents/descending turns?
Apply carburetor heat (if applicable)
Reduce power to appropriate setting
Momentarily maintain level pitch attitude to reduce airspeed
Establish desired bank angle (descending turn)
Allow pitch attitude to decrease as necessary to maintain desired airspeed
Retrim airplane once airspeed is stabilized
What are some common student errors in descents/descending turns?
Failure to crosscheck outside references and instruments (fixation on instruments)
Control movements, rather than control pressures
Uncoordinated use of flight controls
Faulty trim procedures
Failure to clear engine and use carburetor heat as appropriate
