Functions of the skeleton Flashcards
Name the 6 functions of the skeleton
Support
Movement
Shape
Blood cell production
Mineral storage
Protection
How does the skeleton SUPPORT the body
Provides support for organs as it gives something for organs to attach too
Axial skeleton is the basis for all movement
How does the skeleton SHAPE the body
Gives you shape including the shape of your face and how tall you are
How does the skeleton PROTECT the body
Acts as a physical barrier for internal organs as it absorbs the impact (FLAT BONES)
How does the skeleton MOVE the body
Enables movement through the formation of joints and attaches them to the muscular system
How does the skeleton PRODUCE BLOOD CELLS
Within the blood marrow produced in long bones (RBC/WBC)
How does the skeleton STORE MINERALS
Stores minerals like iron/calcium/phosphorus which is used for functions like nerve transitions, metabolism, hemoglobin
Give an example of a bone supporting the body
FEMUR/HUMERUS
Give an example of a bone shaping the body
fibula–> gastrocnemius
cranium –> head
Give an example of a bone protecting the body
cranium –> brain
Give an example of a bone moving the body
shoulder joint moved by humerus and scapula
Give an example of a bone producing blood cells
femur
Give an example of a bone storing minerals
femur
