Functions of the skeletal system Flashcards
What does the skeletal System include
Skeletal system includes bones and joints of the body
What do joints do?
Joints attach to each other
What does our skeletal do?
Our skeletal system provides a framework for internal organs, stores minerals that our body needs to perform and, produces blood cells.
How do bones and muscles work together
bones help muscles produce movement
Did you know?
Bones are more powerful than steel
How many bones are in the skeletal system
206 bones
How many shapes does the skeletal system have?
Four basic shapes
What are the four basic shapes?
Long bone ( femur ) Short bone ( ankle or wrist ) Flat bones ( scapula ( shoulder blade ), or skull) Irregular bones ( vertebrae ( spinal cord )
What are the two types of bone tissue?
Compact bone ( very dense, smooth, and strong ) Cancellous Bone ( spongy and lightweight )
What do the two types of bone tissues, compact and cancellous include?
They both include living cells, which help make repairs if both get broken
What does a typical long bone have?
It has a main shaft called the diaphysis, which has compact bone, two ends called epiphysis, which has cancellous bones.
what is inside a typical long bone?
The main shaft is covered with living cells called the periosteum, in which muscles and tendons
Tendons
Are cords that help muscles attach to bones
Other thing living cells, what else is inside a typical long bone?
In the main shaft, there is the medullary cavity, which contains bone marrow
What does bone marrow stores
bone marrow contains fat, produces blood cells, and plays an important part in the bodies immune system
What is ossification?
A process from birth to 25 years olds, which basically means cartilage or connective tissue is replaced with bone tissue so that bones increased in size and shape
Did you know ? Adults
Appromixaly 10 percent of all adult bone tissue in our body is replaced each year.
What happens when a bone reflects?
Every stress that is put in a bone reflects, basically, a person who hunches over has bones that will gradually become curved , as they are remodeled by the stress
After age 50, what tends to happen to bones
Bones tend to weaken in density
What is osteoporosis?
Occurs to women after menopause and men over 50, in which, dramatic and weakening of bone mass, bones become so weak that they fracture easily. Ex. hip , spine and wrist
