Axial Skeleton Flashcards
how many divisions divide the skeletal system
Two divisions
What are the two divisions of the skeletal system
Axial ( consists of the bones that form the head and trunk ( central part ( thoracic and abdomen ) of a vertebrate.)
Appendicular ( the upper and lower extremities, which include the shoulder girdle and pelvis )
How many bones are in the axial skeleton
80 bones ( skull, vertebrae column, and thoracic)
What is the upper part of the skull and how many bones does it consist of
Cranium, and consist of 8 cranial bones
How many bones form the face
The face has 14 bones called facial bones.
what is a mandible
Helps with chewing and eating
How bones reside in the inner ears
6 inner ear bones, three in each ear, and help in sound
Fontanels/soft spots
gaps in the skull of babies during birth periods because they aren’t well fused together yet. Provide flexibility and help skull to shape and brain growth
By what age does Fontanels close
By age two
How much does a skull weight
1 kilogram
did you know brain size?
We have bigger brains and relatively light skulls
What does the vertebral column support
the head, and incloses and protects the spinal cord and nerve roots
How many bones does a vertebral column have
26 bones, also stacked one top of the other called vertebrae
How many sections is the vertebrae column divided into
it is divided into 5 sections
what are the 5 sections of the vertebrae column
cervical, thoracic, lumbar , Sacral , Coccygeal
