Functions of the Reproductive system Flashcards
What happens in the seminiferous tubules of the testis?
It is is where sperm cells are first developed
What is the role of the leidig cells in the testis?
They secrete testosterone
Where are the leidig cells located within the testis?
they are located outside of the seminiferous tubules
What are the 2 other names for sertoli cells?
nurse or sustenacular cells
Where are the sustenacular cells located in the testis? What do they do?
They are located in the seminiferous tubules and they supply nutrients to the developing sperm and secrete inhibin
What is the role of the spermatids?
Immature precurosors to full grown sperm
Where are the spermatids located in the testis? How many are there?
They are located in the seminiferous tubules and they are the most abundant type of cell in them
What is a primordial follicle?
An ova paused in meiosis that is enclosed in a single layer of simple squamous support cells
What is a developing (primary and secondary) follicle?
It is maturing primordial cell that has it’s outer layer of support cells growing from simple squamous into support cells that increase in number and size as the follicle grows through meiosis
What is a Tertiary (Grafian) follicle?
Largest developed follicle and is now able to go through ovulation
What is the corpus luteum?
The remnant of a follicle just after ovulation
What is produced and released in the testis?
sperm and androgen hormones
What does the ductus deferens do?
transport sperm
What happens in the seminiferous tubules?
It’s the site of sperm production
What happens in the epididymis?
Site of sperm maturation between the seminiferous tubules and ductus deferens
What does the cremaster muscle do?
elevates the scrotum
What does the seminal gland secrete? And how much?
it secretes 60% of semen
What does the prostate gland secrete? and how much?
it secretes 30% of semen
What does the bulbourethral gland secrete?
It secretes and alkaline lubricating fluid
What happens in the ovaries?
The production of ova and estrogens
What is the role of the uterine tubes?
connect ovary with the uterus
What happens in the uterus?
connects the ovaries with the uterus
What is the role of the vagina?
it is a muscular tube that acts as a birth canal
What is the vulva?
its external genitalia
