functional organisation of the cerebral cortex Flashcards
precentral gyrus
Motor cortex
Post central gyrus
somatosensory cortex
where is the auditory cortex?
Superior temporal gyrus
Where is the visual cortex
Gyri of calcarine sulcus
the cingulate gyri and parahippocampal gyrus join here
isthmus
where is the olfactory cortex?
Uncus
where is the collateral sulcus?
medial surface of the temporal lobe
what is the other term for calcarine gyrus?
striate cortex
where is the gustatory (taste) cortex located?
Inferior post central gyrus
Where does the lateral ventropostral nucleus receive information from?
leg
where does the medial ventropostral nucleus recieve information from?
arm
where is the general sensory area located
superior parietal lobe
what is the function of secondary areas?
they are the association areas that provide understanding to sensory input.
what does equipotential mean /
the sensory and motor association areas function the same amount
Agnosia
Agnosia is when awareness persists but there is no understanding of the sensation.
It occurs when the secondary sensory areas are damaged.
What is Apraxia?
Apraxia is the inability to perform purpose movements. It is caused by damage to secondary motor areas.
What is the general association cortex?
it has an integrative function. It links together all the senses and the hippocampus.
- The parieto-temporal cortex is involved in memory.
- The Prefrontal cortex is involved in regulating moods and feelings. It allows decisions to be made by analysing previous experiences.
Language areas of the brain
2 language areas are in the Dominant hemisphere.
1) posterior area (wernicke’s area) is for understanding
2) Anterior area (Broca’s area) is for production of language.
what is aphasia?
damage to wernicke’s area causes inability to understand language.
damage to broca’s area causes inability to articulate speech.
