Brainstem Flashcards
What makes up the brainstem?
Midbrain, Pons and medulla
What nerve emerges from the medullary pontine junction?
Abducent nerve (VI)
what nerves emerge from the cerebellar pontine angle?
- facial (VII)
- vesibulocochlear (VIII)
what nerve passes through the inter-peduncular fossa?
oculomotor nerve (III)
describe the 4th ventricle?
4th ventricle on the dorsal aspect of the brain stem.
Sits between cerebellum and pons
what is the obex?
The obex is where the 4th ventricle narrows to become the central canal of the spinal cord.
What is the Dorsal (posterior) column?
It is an area of white matter on the posterior side of the spinal cord.
It is made up of :
Gracile Fasicle
Cuneate Fasicle
carry fibres for touch and proprioception
where do the gracile and cuneate tubercles lie on the brainstem?
DORSALLY below Obex:
Gracile - medially
Cuneate - laterally
where do the inferior and superior colliculus lie?
Dorsal midbrain below pineal gland
what cranial nerves arise at the level of the midbrain?
- olfactory nerve (I)
- optiv nerve (II)
- oculomotor (III)
- Trochlear (IV)
what cranial nerves arise at the level of the pons?
- Trigeminal (V)
- Abducens (VI ) [ponto-medullary junction)
- Facial (VII) [cerebellar- pontine angle]
- Vestibulocochlear (VIII) [cerebellar-pontine angle]
What cranial nerves arise at level of medulla oblongata?
- Glossopharyngeal (IX)
- Vagus (X)
- accessory (XI)
- hypoglossal (XII)
what cranial nerves are involved in the corneal reflex?
Sensory - Trigeminal nerve (V1 opthalmic branch) [senses stimulus ]
Motor - Facial nerve [causes eyelid to blink]
*corneal reflex = blink reflex
What cranial nerves are involved in the gag reflex?
Sensory : Glossopharyngeal nerve
Motor : Facial nerve
What cranial nerves are involved in the pupillary light reflex?
Sensory = Optic Nerve (senses light) Motor = Oculomotor Nerve (causes constriction of pupil)
