Diencephalon Flashcards

1
Q

describe the corpus callosum

A

it is a a flat band of white matter that connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres.
Commisural fibres run within the corpus callosum and allow communication between the hemispheres.

Q

Describe the septum pellucidum

A

a thin sheet like structure that divides the lateral ventricles. Spans from corpus callosum above to fornix below.

Q

describe the hypothalamus

A

a collection of nuclei that have control over aspects of the autonomic nervous system, metabolic processes, body temp ect.

The OPTIC chiasma, PITUITARY stalk and MAMMILLARY bodies are all attached to the hypothalamus

Q

Describe the optic chiasma

A

it is attached to the hypothalamus.

gives rise to optic nerves which pass through optic canal in skull to provide sensory innervation to the eye.

Q

describe PROJECTION fibres

A
  • allow communication between the the lower parts of the brain / spinal cord and the cortex. (SAME side)

Q

Describe the term BASAL GANGLIA?

A

deep grey matter of cerebral hemispheres form a group of nuclei called basal ganglia.
important in control of MOVEMENT and Coordination
Made up of AMYGDALA and CORPUS STRIATUM.

17
Q

What makes up the CORPUS STRIATUM?

A

Caudate nucleus + Lentiform nucleus

-*Lentiform nucleus is made up of the PUTAMEN and the GLOBUS PALIDUS
