Functional Organisation Flashcards
What are gyri and sulci?
gyri are ridges and sulci are grooves
What are the 4 distinct poles of the brain?
Frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital
What does the sulcus divide?
Motor function from sensory function
What does the hindbrain do?
Cranial nerves 5-12
controls muscles of the face and sensation for the head as well as hearing
What does the midbrain do?
Cranial nerves 3-4
motor control of eye movement driven by both visual and auditory cues (superior and inferior colliculi)
What are the divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
The sympathetic and parasympathetic
Where are the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems?
Parasympathetic = hindbrain sympathetic = spinal cord
What does the hypothalamus do?
Autonomic and neuroendocrine systems are integrated by the hypothalamus
controls circadian rhythms, energy metabolism, reproductive behaviour, body temperature, defensive behaviour and blood pressure/electrolytes
What does the thalamus do?
hub of information flow
relays sensory input
integrates basal ganglia and cerebellum
it effects positive and negative reward memories
How is the neural tube formed?
Neurulation
