Brain in the Cranium Flashcards
What are the two parts that protect the brain?
The neurocranium and the Viscerocranium
What are the 4 brain regions?
Cerebral hemisphere
diencephalon
cerebellum
brain stem
What are the 3 parts of the brain stem?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla oblongata
What are the 4 brain lobes?
Frontal lobe (at the front) Pariteal lobe (at the top) Temporal lobe (at the side) Occipital lobe (at the back)
What are the two sulci?
Central and lateral sulci
What are the 3 cranial fossa’s and which lobes do they accomodate?
Frontal lobe - anterior cranial fossa
Temporal lobe - middle cranial fossa
Cerebellum - posterior cranial fossa
What are the 3 layers of the meninges?
Dura mater (tough) Arachnoid mater (middle) Pia mater (CSF production and supports brain blood supply)
Features of the middle meningeal artery?
Largest of 3 arteries supplying the meninges
branch of the maxillary artery and terminal branch of external carotid artery
runs beneath pterion and through foramen spinosum
What are the purpose of the spinal meninges?
Contain CSF, act to support and protect the spinal cord
What is the circle of willis?
A circulatory anastomosis that supplies blood to the brain and surrounding structures
What are the cerebral ventricles?
4 interconnected cavities of the brain, lined by ependymal cells and filled by the cerebrospinal fluid
they are responsible for the production, transport and removal of CSF
Where is CSF formed, exits and reabsorbed?
Formed = ventricles from choroid plexus exits = roof of the 4th ventricle into the subarachnoid space reabsorbed = by arachnoid granulations into systemic veins
