Functional histology of endodermal structures Flashcards
What structures does the endoderm generally form?
Inner body tubes and their organs
What type of epithelium is in the respiratory tract of the bronchus?
Ciliated, psuedostratified columnar epithelium
What other cell type is present in respiratory epithelium of bronchus, and how can you recognise it under the microscope?
Goblet cells, which have clear bubbly cytoplasm containing mucin
What type of epithelium is in alveolar walls?
simple squamous epithelium
What is the function of goblet cells?
Secrete mucus to trap foreign materials
What is the mucociliary apparatus?
Innate defence mechanism of lungs consisting of cilia, mucous layer and periciliary liquid
What can damage the mucociliary appartaus?
Smoking
What are the 4 functional layers of the GI tract wall?
Mucosa (lining), submucosa, muscularis propria (muscle layer), serosa/adventitia
What are the 4 types of mucosa that line GI tract?
Protective, secretive, absorptive, absorptive and protective
What epithelium type makes up the protective mucosa of GI tract lining?
non-keratinising stratified squamous epithelium
Where in the GI tract is protective mucosa?
mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, anal canal
What epithelium type covers secretive mucosa?
simple columnar epithelium
What are the 2 types of secretory glands in the secretive mucosa?
Mucus-secreting or acid-secreting
Where is secretive mucosa located in the GI tract lining?
In stomach
What type of epithelium makes up absorptive mucosa that covers villi of SI?
columnar cells
