Functional Anatomy - Circulatory System Flashcards
1
Q
Characteristics of the Heart
A
- Hollow muscular structure
- Walls contract and relax about 60-80 times per minute.
- Contains four chambers:
- Two atria
- Two ventricles
2
Q
Atria
A
- The two upper chambers of the heart.
3
Q
Ventricles
A
- The two lower chambers of the heart.
4
Q
Systole
A
- The contraction of the atria and ventricles
5
Q
Diastole
A
- The relaxation of the atria and ventricles
6
Q
Blood Pressure
A
- The pressure within the arteries that is caused by the pumping action of the heart.
7
Q
Arteriole
A
- Small blood vessel that carries blood to various parts of the body.
8
Q
Capillaries
A
- Microscopic blood vessels with extremely thin walls
- Link arterioles to venules
9
Q
Characteristics of Arteries
A
- Strong, elastic walls.
- Have a pulse
- Carry bright red, oxygenated blood.
10
Q
Characteristics of Veins
A
- Thin, less elastic walls
- No pulse
- Carry blood reddish-blue in colour, deoxygenated.
11
Q
Blood
A
- Made of blood cells (45%) and blood plasma (55%).
12
Q
Red Blood Cells
A
- Iron-rich cells that carry oxygen around the body
13
Q
White Blood Cells
A
- The body’s defence system, fighting infection and building up the body’s immunity.
14
Q
Platelets
A
- Cells that help form blood clots to stop bleeding; produced in bone marrow.
15
Q
Path of blood around body:
A
- Blood gets oxygenated at lungs.
- Enters heart through left atrium
- Leaves heart from left ventricle
- Goes through aorta and distributes around body.
- Once oxygen used used, blood travels back to heart.
- Enters through right atrium.
- Exits to lungs through right ventricle.
