Examples of political hostility and the consequences

A

German economy was an a downturn and growing political hostility towards the government

Opposition : Small extremist political parties like the Nazi National Democratic party, groups like students or German Federation of trade unions

Consequences : government became more repressive, e.g. SPD strongly objected to emergency law, but voted with the CSU to introduce one in 1968.

A

Was critical of Adenauer policy of ex-Nazis assimilation, and pushed ideas of Ostpolitik.

These policies were met with serious opposition, as did several other liberal measures, like the decriminalisation of homosexuality or reduction of voting age to 18.

Did it succeed and why was this a success for Brandt himself

A

October 1970 FDP politicians join CVU and March 1972. Many SPD members joined the CDU. Forced a constructive vote of no confidence naming Reena, Bozell of the CDU as the replacement chancellor.

It lost by two votes, and Brandt responded by calling early elections in Nov 1972. In effect, this was a vote of confidence on him and Ostolitik, and then the highest turnout ever SPD won the most seats.

For example, March 1977, 15,000 people protested against the building of a nuclear processing plants in lower Saxony .
