Freud Flashcards
What was the aim of Freuds research?
To use the case of a child suffering from a horse phobia and many other symptoms as evidence for the Oedipus complex
Who was the participant?
‘little hans’ or Herbert Graf. He was five years old but some of what Freud analysed was things he had demonstrated earlier in his life
What design was the study? What does this mean?
It was a clinical case study. It meant Freud spoke to Hans very few times. It was mainly Han’s father Sending things to Freud

That is seemed to relate to the size of their penis & Han’s dissatisfaction of his own
What conflict developed between Han’s and his father at four years old?
Han’s enjoyed climbing into bed with his mother in the morning, his father objected to this which made his anxiety worse, to the degree he suffered attacks

It lessened to just being white horses with a thick harness on their face
What two fantasies did Han’s had that Freud interpreted to mean the end of Han’s oedipus complex?
1- He fantasised he had several children, in which his mother was their mother and his father was their grandad
2- He fantasised a plumber removes his bottom and penis, replacing them with larger ones

Castration anxiety resulting from his mothers threat to have it cut off and fear of his father from the banishment of Han’s from his parent’s bed
What were the giraffes in Han’s fantasy?
His parents, the long-necked giraffe crying out was his father’s objection of him sharing the bed, with the crumpled giraffe being his mother
In Freud’s opinion, what was the children fantasy?
A fairly friendly resolution of the Oedipus complex, in which his father as his mother’s main love object but the father was allowed to remain
In Freud’s opinion, what was the plumber fantasy?
Han’s identifying with his father, he gained a larger penis which would be in line with his fathers.
