Fresh tissue examination Flashcards
Simplest & least invasive
using 25g 10cc
Fine needle aspiration
Removes cells & small amount of the surrounding tissues
Core needle biopsy
Takes out more surrounding tissue & abnormality but not all
Incisional biopsy
Removing the entire area in question
Excisional biopsy
Used in obtaining full-thickness skin spx using a circular blade (3-4mm cylindrical core)
Punch biopsy
Small fragments are removed from a surface
Shave biopsy
Tissue is scooped/spooned to remove growths in endometrium/cervical canal
Curettings
specimen is immersed in a watch glass w/ isotonic salt soln
Teasing/Dissociation
Pieces of specimen are forcibly compressed with another slide w/ a cover glass
Squash prep (< 1mm)
Used in cytological exams
smear prep
method where secretions are uniformly distributed & directly applied on the slide
streaking
method where mucous is gently spread into a moderately thick film
spreading
method where FNAB specimens are dispersed evenly over the surface of the 2 slides
Pull-apart
A surface of a freshly cut piece of tissue & pressed on the surface of a clean slide w/o destroying their intercellular relationship
Touch prep (impression smear)
Commonly used in
- rapid patho dx
- enzyme histochemistry
- dx of lipids & carbs
- immunofluorescent & immunohistochemical staining
- neuropatho
