Brown v. Board of Education
Ruling racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional
“Doll Test”
A test on whether or not children preferred the white or black doll.
Montgomery Bus Boycott
After the Rosa Parks incident, African Americans began to boycott the Montgomery bus/transportation system in protest for equal rights in transportation.
Little Rock Crisis
As 9 African American students were about to enter Central High School, they were prevented to enter by the governor.
Strategies of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Marches, peaceful protests, boycotts, etc.
Birmingham Campaign (1963)
A strategy to attack the segregation system of the city and to bring awareness to the issue.
Freedom Rides
After the Supreme Court decision to declare segregated transportation across state lines unconstitutional, many African Americans began to test it and many riots and attacks occurred.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Outlawed discriminatory voting practices such as literacy tests.
Black Panthers
A political group with the ideology of black nationalism against things like police brutality.
Kerner Commission Report
It attributed to the riots of economic opportunity for African Americans and Latinos, police brutality, racism, etc.
Civil Rights Act of 1968
Prohibits discrimination concerning the sale, rental, or financing of housing based on religion, race, national origin, and sex.
Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society - Goals and Implementation
LBJ’s goals in the Great Society were to end poverty, reduce crime, abolish inequality and improve the environment.
Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education
Busing programs that aimed to speed up racial integration of public schools.
Regents of the University of CA v. Bakke
A Supreme Court Case in 1978 which said that a university’s admissions criteria which used race as a definite and exclusive basis for admission decision. This violated the 14th Amendment.
National Women’s Organization
The largest feminist organization with over 500,000 members founded in 1966.
Title IX
Prohibited sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity discrimination in any education program or in receiving financial assistance.
Roe v. Wade
A Supreme Court decision that protects a women’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction.
Equal Rights Amendment
A proposed constitutional amendment that guarantees equal rights regardless of sex under the law but was never ratified.
Cesar Chavez
A civil rights activist who fought for equality for Latinos.
Harvey Milk
The first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California.
Stonewall Riots
Actions made by the gay community in response to a police raid.
