15
Q

What is perhaps the most important stage / phase?

A

Planning - If you plan badly, your project will likely never be better than the plan.

16
Q

In what stage is the project scope built?

A

Executing (p36)

17
Q

In what stage does the team maintain what it planned?

A

Monitor and control

18
Q

What is the name of the stage where the project comes to an end?

A

Closing

19
Q

How does the American Society of Quality define the approach to process development?

A

Plan, Do, Check, Act

20
Q

When is overlapping phase relationship can be used in what context? What is the risk in using overlapping phase relationship?

A

Overlapping phase relationship is used to fast track a project. The risk of use is in creating rework if a phase is started prior obtaining accurate information from the prior phase.

21
Q

What is the iterative phase relationship and when is it used?

A

Iterative relationship is planning for the next phase of work at the same time work in the current phase is occurring. Its used in high change environments.

22
Q

What are three different types of life cycles?

A

Predictive: Waterfall or plan driven lifecycle approach. Used when the work is well known and well understood.
Iterative: Project scope is identified early and schedule / budget are adjusted as the team learns more about the project. Used when goal is to minimize complexity or when partial delivery can be of use to some stakeholders.
Adaptive: Known as agile methods - generally a change driven approach to project management. Used in high change environments.

23
Q

What is phase gate?

A

Review process used to determine if project is likely to succeed. Review occurs at set intervals.

24
Q

What is role of Functional Manager?

A

Deals with people and controlling resources. Will often conflict with PM and direction of the project because FM is focused on running some business function and project may pull resources away from daily business.

25
Q

What is role of Sponsor?

A

Person who provides resources and support for the project - responsible for the success of the project.

26
Q

What is role of performing organization?

A

It is the division of the company doing the work.

27
Q

What is the role of an Influencer?

A

Person or group indirectly related to a project. Can have positive or negative influence on project.

28
Q

What is role of Sr Management?

A

Supports the sponsor, the project charter, and ultimately the project. Helps to prioritize items associated with other projects. Do not confuse with functional management.

29
Q

What is role of Stakeholders?

A

Can be project team members and anyone actively involved or impacted.

30
Q

What are the 6 types of organizational types?

A

Functional
Weak/balanced/strong Matrix
Projectized
Composite

31
Q

What are the characteristics of a Functional organization?

A

Operational mindset where projects are not a high priority
People of similar skill are grouped together and managed by someone with a similar mindset.
PM authority=Little or none
Resources Available for work = Little or none
Control of spending = Functional manage
Persons role PM = Part-time

32
Q

What characterizes a Projectized Organization?

A

Organization designed driven by project (or operations by project). The focus greatly increases the the teams ability to optimize performance since project is main focus.

33
Q

What characterizes a matrixed organization?

A
Accomodate established funcational organizational structures while being flexible enough to implement projects. Under matrix org a person or PM can have multiple bosses.
PM authority= High
Resources available= High
Spending control= PM
Role of PM= full time
Staff role= full time
34
Q

What characterizes a composite organization?

A

Hybrid structure with characteristics of matrix, Projectized, and functional.
