FRAGRANCE AND SKIN CARE PART 2 Flashcards
Essential oils
volatile, non-water soluble aroma compounds extracted from plants by steam distillery
how are essential oils extracted
steam distillery - using test tube with ceramic wool soaked in water, dry and peels/leafs then heating, travelling through tube to condenser into a beaker which forms oil layer on top of water
Terpene
Unsaturated compund formed by joining isoprene units
terpene chemical formula
2-methylbuta-1,3-diene
5C with double bond 3 attached to one then one other
linear isoprene
attached head to tail
types of isporene
linear
cyclical
oxidised terpene
lose unsaturation
OH groups introduced
form alcohol or aldehyde
terpene use
perfume, flavours in food
uv produces
free radicals which damage skin
3 stages of free radical chain
initiation: form free radical from UV
propagation: end with same number of free radicals on either side
termination: 2 free radicals together to form stable product
limit UV damage
sun cream or sunblock
what does sun block/cream contain
chemicals that absorb UV radiation
contain free radical scavengers
free radical scavangers
react with free radicals to produce stable products
