Fractures Flashcards
Complete Fracture
The bone is entirely separated into 2 or more pieces
Incomplete Fracture
The bone has cracks without entirely disrupting the continuity of the bone
Closed Fracture
The bone does not produce an open wound in the skin
Open Fracture
The bone produces an open wound in the skin
Colle’s Fracture
An injury caused by the fall on an outstretched hand (in an attempt to brace the fall)
Comminuted Fracture
The bone is splintered or crushed into more than 2 pieces (usually several fragments)
Compression Fracture
The bone is pushed together by a compressive force rather than being broken apart; this bone fracture, usually of the spine, causes loss of height
Epiphyseal Fracture
Fracture occurs between epiphysis & diaphysis of a growing long bone & the plate is separated from 1 of them; without successful tx, normal growtdh of the limb may be inhibited
Fracture Dislocation
A fracture near a joint that also involves dislocation of that joint
Greenstick Fracture
the bone splinters along 1 side, the other side bending; common in children because their bones contain more organic matrix & are more flexible than those in adults
Impacted Fracture
An injury in which a portion of the bone is forced into another part of the bone; bone fragments are wedged together
Oblique Fracture
A bone break in a direction that slants across a central line running the length of the bone
Pathologic Fracture
A fracture of a bone already weakened by existing disease
Spiral Fracture
An injury in which the bone has been twisted apart
Stress Fracture
The accumulation of stress induced micro fractures which may eventually result in a fracture through the bone cortex
