Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil Flashcards
How was crude oil formed?
Formed from the buried remains of plants and animals - it’s a fossil fuel. Over millions of years, the remains turn to crude oil, which can be extracted by drilling and pumping
Crude oil is a mixture of …
many different compounds most of which are Hydrocarbon molecules
What is a mixture?
A mixture consists of 2 or more elements / compounds that AREN’T chemically bonded together
Hydrocarbons are [ ] just like petrol and diesel
Fuels
There’re no [ ] between different parts of a mixture therefore they all keep their [ ], such as their [ ] points. This means that the different part of the mixture can be separated out using [ ].
chemical bonds
original proprieties
condensing
physical methods
Crude oil is split into separated groups of [ ].
Hydrocarbons
How does fractional distillation work?
The fractionating column works continuously, with heated crude oil piped in at the bottom.
The vaporised oil rises up the column and the various fractions are constantly tapped off at the different levels where they condense
