Fractional Distillation of Crude Oil Flashcards

1
Q

How was crude oil formed?

A

Formed from the buried remains of plants and animals - it’s a fossil fuel. Over millions of years, the remains turn to crude oil, which can be extracted by drilling and pumping

Q

How does fractional distillation work?

A

The fractionating column works continuously, with heated crude oil piped in at the bottom.
The vaporised oil rises up the column and the various fractions are constantly tapped off at the different levels where they condense
