Fractional distillation of crude oil Flashcards
1
Q
What is crude oil?
A
A mixture of hydrocarbons, mostly alkanes
2
Q
How is crude oil separated?
A
Into groups of alkanes with similar boiling points using a process called fractional distillation
3
Q
What is the process of fractional distillation?
A
- Crude oil is heated in a furnace to make vapour.
- The vapour passes into the column, which has a negative temperature gradient.
- Alkanes separate by boiling point, e.g. longer chain alkanes, which have higher boiling points, condense nearer the bottom of the column
4
Q
What does each fraction contain?
A
A range of different alkanes with similar boiling points
