Define social welfare, what does it include?
The well-being of society and general efforts to improve that well-being
Includes: health, environment, wealth, social participation, support to individuals and families
What are the divisions of social welfare?
Governement, private sector, voluntary sector, individuals and families
Define social policy,
provide examples
Descisions made about what (or what not) to do in relation to a specific social prob
ex: funding allocation, sustainable housing, unemployment insurance
Who can make social policy?
gov, within organizations or by individuals
Define welfare state
the structures that a gov creates to enact social policy and improve social welfare
Define Retrenchment
Define Offloading
R: limit the welfare state by completely pulling a service
O: limit the welfare state by reducing a service
Major Gov structures in Canada/ gov status?
Constitutional democracy
Executive: prime minister - decision making
Legislative: house of commons - lawmaking
Judiciary: courts - law application
Gov heirarchy of functions?
Federal: the whole of Canada (ex: defense)
trade/foreign affairs, currency, fisheries/oceans, citizenship, immigration, and national defense
Provincial: Ontario (ex: education)
Education, health care delivery, transportation/highways, natural resources
Municipal: Ottawa (ex: bylaws)
Waste removal, libraries, sewage, parks and recreation
Define fiscal federalism, what does it include?

Financial relationship between the federal gov and the provincial gov - how money get’s transfered
Includes: coordination over taxation, grants to provinces for specific programs, equalization payments (equalize standard of service provision)
Define intersectionality
how different forms of oppression combine to form new kinds of oppresion
what are the three types of self awareness?
Reflective: become aware of personal biases and interactive process of identity construction
Reflexive: become aware of how meaning is created through interactions with others
Critical reflectivity: acknowledging oneself as affecting/being affected by society
Reading: Self-awareness, critical reflectivity and identity - what’s the point?
vulnerability and self-reflection allow people to form meaningful and respectful relationships with people from varying groups
Define identity development models
Identity development models: method of exploring similarities/differences between groups -The progression through self-awareness to autonomy/no judgment of groups separate from one’s own group
